i received a rejection in today's mail from Ireland, for a submission i sent over 6 months ago to The Stinging Fly. denied from yet another country.
and i'm of Irish descent, too. my own people don't even want me. ah well.
at least the poems i sent them were stronger than the ones i sent Nerve Cowboy (see two posts down). i thought they were pretty damn good, even.
another country down, another 190 or so to go.

it's never as bad as you think. well, that's not true. sometimes it exactly as bad as you think. and often it's worse than you think. but, don't think about those things. i'm trying to cheer you up, dammit.

It's not really that I don't have anything to submit, I just don't have the energy right now to decide where to send something, obsess over what to send and then, actually send it. I feel sort of...frazzled with this freakin' move. Every day, another kid does something either annoying, scary or something to make me question EVERYTHING on the planet. Going a bit nuts now.
Hopefully, when we get up there, settle down and get unpacked I'll send some stuff out. This should be somewhere around January!
OH and so I am a complete and total whiner...my printer is dead. RIP, Old Friend. I have NO idea how I'm going to replace it! But that's on the agenda for when we get up to NC.

On behalf of the Irish nation I’d like to apologise to j and Glenn – I’m disappointed and a little surprised – the people struck me as very professional there – tip – did you ask to be replied to via email or send IPC – though I live on the same island I’m in a different country (sorry, not giving history/geography lesson just saying) and ask to be replied to via email, which they have done, so far – I’ve read in several places that the Republic’s postal service does not take IRC – you two, I’d try again, and Luis and Kat, I’d give them a whirl – you know the way you have an affinity with a mag/press – or is that just me – well one of mine would have to be the Fly (the other, truthfully, remark) hence my disappointment – bit gutted for yous. cheers for the kind comments Luis and j.
am actually awaiting a reply from them myself – according to the news on the website they’re trying to let everyone know by end of month – so should be soon – have so many body parts crossed I feel like a contortionist.
Kat – much luck with the move and as for subbing sometimes you just gotta send – get them out – people close their eyes and stick pins in the list of horses running the Grand National (horse race where the favourite has a much chance as the horse that’s only fit for the glue factory) just do the same, pick five, point and send – just gets you started.

i did send an IRC. i didn't think about being notified via email. should've thunk it.
the editors name (or at least the one on the letter i received) was unpronouncable. accent galore and no vowels. i was afraid i had sent to a non-English magazine in error.
anyway, it was nice to get it back. honestly, i'd completely forgotten that i'd submitted. it would've been a better surprise had one floated past them, but oh well.
i'm sure it took so long because they were busy drinking. you know those Irish, man. always drin...GULP, excuse me...always drinking instead of doing stuff.

justin-I love unpronouncable Irish names. My brother-in-law is Sean. Do you know how many people have called him Seen??? Isn't that awful! I wanted to name Griffin, Seamus. But we thought it would be butchered. :) And these (Sean and Seamus) are the easy ones. :)

how in the name of all that’s holy how do you feck up Sean – one of my brothers in law is called Seamus, here though some call him Seamy (shame-e) which I admit I don’t like.
also have a wee cousin called Seosamh – have a go at pronouncing that – spell it out phonetically, bit of a competition if you will.

the english word ‘show’
followed by the sound ‘sh’
ending with the abbreviated or cut short version of have, ‘ ’ave ’

it’s Irish for Joseph – which you where almost saying with the above.
however it’s pronounced saw-shoe. that’s right, just say the english words saw and shoe really quickly and you’re speakin Irish.
oh and yeah – the Irish for Brian is not nearly as exciting – the Irish for Brian is, wait for it, , wait for it, drum roll please – Brian. It is Irish, no english equivalent eg Sean=John, Seamus=James.

Unsure about the whole Caitlin/Kathleen thing – but definitely I would be pronouncing Caitlin as Kate-lin and your name the way you do.
No idea about Brian either, I have only ever heard it pronounced, you know, Brian – as in “Brian, come away from that window.”
but really I’m about as knowledgeable on Irish as j – in the corner of the country where I live Irish isn’t taught – well, it is, but only in catholic grammar schools – you start there age 11, do it for a few years and then have to choose to keep it on – as I only made it to a grammar school when I was 16 I have been in a class where Irish was taught – and it definitely aint taught in the state schools here – down south it’s compulsory from day one of primary school.
and j, stop taken the piss outa Irish, leave that to me.

I hunted through the books I have not packed yet and found one called Beyond Shannon and Sean. In there it says that Caitlin is pronounced Kathleen. :) But this was written by two American women so who knows! :)
